It is the most distant bigger island in the group of central Dalmatian islands - 45 km from the land while from the island of Hvar is divided by 8 km wide Vis Channel. Island’s surface is 90 km2 while the surface of the Vis archipelago (that consists of Palagruža, Biševo, Sv. Andrija, Budikovac, Jabuka, Brusnik, etc.) is about 100 km2. Vis coastline is about 75 km. By regular ferry-boat lines Vis is connected with the island of Hvar and during the summer months with Ancona, in the Italian part of the Adriatic. It has the Adriatic type of Mediterranean climate, with hot and dry summers and mild and wet winters. The average annual temperature is over 16°C. During the summer is for a degree or two lower than at the land while during the winter is for a degree or two higher. The average annual precipitation is about 800 mm on the m2 that is less than on the surrounding islands and land while thanks to its geological structure it has more springs of potable water than all islands together.
